Shingles vaccine is highly effective in preventing Shingles (herpes zoster) and its complications, such as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN).

Who needs it

Recommended for adults 50 years and older, and those 18 and older who are immunocompromised.  Anyone who has had chickenpox or if you may be at risk of getting shingles due to travel or mass gatherings. 

When to get it

It is administered in a 2 dose series, 2-6 months between the 2 doses.  Ideally 2 weeks prior to travel would provide suitable protection.  

What to expect

Serious side effects are very rare.  Usual injection site side effects may occur but usually are mild and transient.
